What changed
Canada selected Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems as the preferred supplier for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project and began negotiations for a fleet of up to 12 conventionally powered submarines. Hanwha Ocean remains the reserve supplier.
The public target is to deliver the first four submarines in 2034. Contracting is expected no later than the end of 2027. The project is subject to Canada’s Industrial and Technological Benefits Policy.
Why it matters
The centre of gravity now moves from bidder selection to negotiation, delivery structure, Canadian industrial participation, infrastructure, and long-term sustainment. Those work packages are the most relevant path for Canadian suppliers.
What to watch
- The final contract or government-to-government arrangement.
- Canadian sustainment-enterprise decisions and named industrial partners.
- Licensing, intellectual-property transfer, infrastructure, training, and supply-chain commitments.
- Changes to the 2034 first-delivery target.
